What is the Walsall Borough Local Plan?

We need to make sure there are enough homes and jobs for people living and working in the borough of Walsall. The local plan will show where we expect new building to happen and the areas that we will protect for their existing uses. We will use the plan when we determine planning applications. It will replace the documents that make up the existing local plan. You can view these on the council's local plan pages

We expect the number of people in the borough to grow over the next 15-20 years. This means that we will need more homes for people to live in and places for people to work. The borough also has many attractive areas of open space and places for nature. The local plan will make sure that new homes and places of work are in the right locations. It will check services such as schools and GPs. It will also seek to protect valuable open space and nature conservation sites.

The first stage of the local plan is to work out where different types of development we need in the future could go. To help with this we are running a call for sites. We are asking you to submit ideas for how land might be developed and used in the future. Uses can include homes, employment and other uses that we have listed.

We will update our future planning policy page as the local plan progresses

We Are Walsall 2040

We Are Walsall 2040 is the vision for what residents and businesses want the borough to be like by 2040. Over 8,000 people, organisations and groups helped shape the We are Walsall vision. They highlighted the need to continue to create a thriving borough where people feel safe, with clean green streets and spaces, good jobs and leisure opportunities for all.

On 21 June 2023 the council’s cabinet approved the final strategy for how We are Walsall 2040 will be brought about. The strategy provides an ambitious collective vision for the borough by 2040. It provides a framework for Walsall Council and its partners to prioritise resources and shared ambitions for a Walsall that works for everyone. Many organisations are now working alongside the council to help deliver We Are Walsall 2040. They include local health partners, West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Service and Walsall College.
